Finding a florist who can actually bring your vision to life can feel like a bit of a treasure hunt, so it’s super important to know what questions to toss their way, what to look for in a solid florist, and how to get a handle on flowers. Do a little research ahead of time, and I bet you’ll find some gorgeous blooms!
Just like any other vendor you hire for your big day, it’s always a smart move to ask friends and family for recommendations when you’re on the hunt for a florist. If you catch a wedding or event and spot some flowers that make you go “wow,” don’t hesitate to ask the host who they got them from.
One of the first things to hash out with a potential florist is your budget. This helps them steer you towards blooms that won’t break the bank. And definitely check out their shop! You want to get a feel for how things run and how they treat their customers. Right off the bat, a good florist should ask about your dress and the colors of your bridesmaids’ dresses. If you’ve got a picture or a fabric swatch, bring it along! An experienced florist might even ask about your wedding colors when you chat on the phone. When you pop into the shop, they might have some arrangements ready to show you what they can whip up for your wedding.
A solid florist will consider your preferences but will also steer you towards the best flowers for the season. A common mistake brides make is bringing along magazine cutouts to their meeting. While that works for dress shopping, it’s not exactly the best approach for flowers. Those pics can give the florist a sense of your style for bouquets or centerpieces, but they won’t help much with actually picking the flowers. A great florist will take all your ideas into account—think your dress, veil, bridesmaids’ dresses, centerpieces, venue, and more.
Before you sign anything, ask how many other events they’re handling on your wedding day. You might want to avoid a florist who seems to be juggling too many things at once. Make sure all the details of your agreement are laid out in a contract, including delivery times and what substitutes they’ll use if your first-choice flowers aren’t available.
